Ancestral Wisdom exhibition at the Northwest Reno Library.
So much of my life I have been fixated on ancestral trauma. I have thought tirelessly about the suffering and pain inflicted upon my ancestors. The fear that was instilled within them, corrupting their way of living. It’s a dark reverie that haunts me. It habitually takes me from the present. After seeking assistance to relieve this pain, my healer reminded me that my ancestors carried much more than just pain. They carried wisdom.
Ancestral Wisdom is a work beyond me. I’m in communion with those of the unseen, specifically setting an intention to work with my ancestors. I channel them utilizing various photographic mediums, some from my own archive such as photographs I have taken before in the past and those that are within my family albums. Other materials are sourced in old books, magazines, and newspapers.
This project is supported in part by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Art.
